Day trip from Chongqing

Jinfo Mountain day trip from Chongqing

Which gate to use, how the cable cars work, how to get there from Chongqing, and how to fit Jinfo Mountain into one day.

Quick answer

Checked September 2026.

Jinfo Mountain is in Nanchuan District, south of central Chongqing (Nanchuan town is about 88 km from Jiefangbei). It is a karst “table mountain” with cliffs on all four sides and a flat top, rising to 2,238 m. It became a World Natural Heritage site in 2014, and it is the only one in the Chongqing metropolitan area. By private car it takes about 2–2.5 hours each way from the city (depending on the gate and the traffic), so you can go and come back the same day. The mountain has three gates. At the West Gate and the North Gate you take a cable car to the top; at the South Gate you can drive straight up. Tickets are return tickets, so you leave by the gate you came in. Allow most of a day on the mountain. In summer it is more than 10°C cooler than the city, and in winter there is snow and a ski area. For sinkholes and natural bridges, choose Wulong. For clifftops, caves and snow, choose Jinfo Mountain.

A Jinfo Mountain day trip can go into your private trip. Send us your dates and how many of you there are. We send one car, one driver and one licensed English-speaking guide to pick you up at your hotel. The car is yours until 23:00, and the guide stays with you for the whole agreed route. WhatsApp us

Where is Jinfo Mountain, and why is it worth a whole day?

Jinfo Mountain is in Nanchuan District, Chongqing, in the Dalou Mountains. The highest peak is 2,238 m, and the mountain rises almost 1,900 m from foot to top. UNESCO lists it as part of the South China Karst, because it is a unique karst table mountain surrounded by towering cliffs. Wulong, also in Chongqing, is on the same World Heritage listing, but the two show you very different things. At Wulong you see natural bridges on the valley floor. At Jinfo Mountain you see clifftops, caves and high mountain forest.

The sheer cliffs of Jinfo Mountain lit gold at sunset, with cloud over the top
  • Where the name comes from: at dusk the setting sun lights up the ridges on the north side, and the whole mountain looks like a golden reclining Buddha. That is why it is called Jinfo, “Golden Buddha”, Mountain.
  • From the Chongqing government's introduction: the scenic area covers 1,300 square kilometres, and 8,085 species of plants and animals have been recorded there, 4,180 of them medicinal plants. It is called a “gene bank” of living things.
  • It has the best snow near central Chongqing, with snow lying for more than three months in winter. In summer the mountain is on average more than 10°C cooler than the city.
  • It is a national 5A scenic area, in Sanquan town, Nanchuan District. In the words of the Nanchuan District government, Jinfo Mountain is the only World Natural Heritage site in the Chongqing metropolitan area, and Nanchuan town is about 88 km from Jiefangbei.

West, North or South Gate: which one should you use?

All three gates get you to the top, and you can see the main sights on top whichever gate you use. The difference is how you get up. At the West Gate you take a scenic area bus, then a cable car. At the North Gate you take the cable car straight up from the lower station. The South Gate is the only one where you can drive all the way to the top, and you need to buy a self-drive ticket online in advance. All tickets are return tickets: if you go in at the West Gate, you come out at the West Gate. At the foot of the mountain the West Gate and the North Gate are about 50 km apart, so do not set the wrong one in your navigation.

  • Return tickets mean you cannot go up at the West Gate and come down at the North Gate, unless you buy a one-way ticket at the ticket office. So our car waits for you at the gate you went in by.
  • In winter (the snow season), when the paths on top ice over, the scenic area closes some routes on top, and the other sights stay open as normal. For which cable car is running on the day, go by the scenic area's notice.

How to choose: in spring, summer and autumn the West Gate is usually the better choice, as there is more to see on the way up. In winter, if you are going for the snow, use the North Gate. If one cable car is closed for maintenance, switch to the other gate. The day before you set off, we check the scenic area's notice and plan around the gates open that day.

How do the Jinfo Mountain cable cars work? How long are the queues?

The West Gate and the North Gate each have a cable car, and these are the main way up to the top and back down. Cable car tickets are bought separately, one way or return. At the West Gate you first change to a scenic area bus at the visitor centre to reach the lower cable car station. At the North Gate the cable car goes straight up from the lower station. Both cable cars close for maintenance for a while every year, and during that time you can only go up from another gate. At weekends, on public holidays and on snow days, the queues up and down are much longer. The last cable car down is at around 5 pm, so leave time to queue.

  • From 1 to 14 June 2026, the West Gate cable car was closed for maintenance, and the scenic area asked visitors to use the North or South Gate instead. In early December 2025, the west slope cable car had its yearly inspection, and the only ways up were the north slope cable car or driving up the south slope. Maintenance happens every year; only the dates change.
  • The sights on top are spread out. A paid sightseeing bus on top links them, if you get tired of walking.
  • Tip: on the west slope, the cable car down leaves from the upper station on top. If you walk up and get tired halfway, you cannot take the cable car down from the middle.
  • If you are afraid of heights: the cable car passes above the cliffs for a stretch, and the cliff walkway on top has rock on one side and a deep valley on the other. If you would rather not walk it, you can go round it, and our guide changes the route to suit you.

How do you get to Jinfo Mountain from Chongqing?

The easiest way is a private car straight to the gate you choose, with no changes, about 2–2.5 hours each way. You can also take the bullet train: Chongqing East to Nanchuan North takes 21 minutes at the fastest. But Chongqing East station is not in the city centre, you still have to change at Nanchuan North to get to the gate, and on weekdays there is only one morning train that works for a day trip. By long-distance bus on your own, you change in Nanchuan town, and buses to the West Gate and the North Gate leave from two different bus stations.

  • Train times change every day, and there are fewer trains on weekdays than at weekends. On Wednesday 14 October, for example, if you miss the 16:57, the next direct train to Chongqing East is not until 21:50. Check 12306 before you go. When we plan your trip, we use the actual trains running that week.
  • There are also trains from Chongqing West to Nanchuan North, but they take over an hour, much slower than from Chongqing East.

What is the best way to plan the day?

Leave your hotel in the city early, reach the gate in the morning, and take the cable car up while it is quiet. Have lunch on the mountain or at the foot. In the afternoon, walk the cliff walkway and see the Ancient Buddha Cave on top, then come down before the last cable car. You are back in the city by early evening, with time for hotpot at night. Below is our sample plan; we adjust it to your gate and how fast you walk.

Sample plan (West Gate version; based on about 2–2.5 hours each way by car, and adjusted to where your hotel is and the traffic on the day)

TimeWhat you do
07:00Pickup at your hotel in the city, then onto the expressway
About 09:00–09:30Arrive at the West Gate. The guide buys the tickets; take the scenic area bus to the lower cable car station, then the cable car up
About 10:00–12:00On top: Golden Turtle Facing the Sun viewpoint → cliff walkway (may be closed in winter) → Ecological Stone Forest
12:00–13:00Lunch (the guide arranges it around your gate and pace)
13:00–15:30Ancient Buddha Cave → Yaochiba → Jinfo Temple, then the sightseeing bus on top back to the upper cable car station
15:30–16:30Cable car down, then the bus back to the West Gate
About 18:30–19:00Back in the city. If you still have the energy, go for hotpot or see Hongya Cave in the evening
  • The scenic area stops selling tickets fairly early in the afternoon (about 15:30 on weekdays, about 16:00 at weekends and on public holidays), so we always plan to arrive in the morning.
  • Tip: at weekends and on public holidays there are queues for the car park, the scenic area bus and the cable car. Setting off early makes a big difference.
  • If you would like to stay a night at the foot of the mountain, tell us.

What is there to see on top? The 7 best places

The sights at Jinfo Mountain are on top. There are towering cliffs on all four sides, but the top itself is gentle high forest and meadow. Most visitors take the cable car up and walk a loop of boardwalks and paths on top, linking the places below. In winter, when the paths ice over, some of them close for a while.

  1. Golden Turtle Facing the Sun: a stretch of cliff on the western edge of the top. When the late sun shines on it, its outline looks like a golden turtle lying in the sun. It is one of Jinfo Mountain's ten landmark sights.
  2. Cliff walkway (Lingkong Walkway): a walkway built against a sheer rock face, with the cliff on one side and a deep valley on the other. It is the most thrilling part of Jinfo Mountain. If you are afraid of heights, think twice.
  3. Ancient Buddha Cave: a karst cave high up, at about 2,100 m, with more than a thousand statues of arhats inside and traces of saltpetre making from 700 years ago. It is cold inside all year, so bring an extra layer.
  4. Ecological Stone Forest: rocks and old trees grow together here, with roots wrapped round the stones, so you see forest growing on karst.
  5. World Wild Ancient Azalea Park: Jinfo Mountain has more than forty kinds of tall mountain azalea trees, and a few of them grow only here. They flower from April to early May, first on the south slope.
  6. Jinfo Temple: the temple on top. Jinfo Mountain is a holy site of Dipankara, the ancient Buddha, and has a long Buddhist history.
  7. Bitan Valley (west slope only): a stream valley path at the foot of the mountain. The water is clear, it is cool in summer, and you can see wild macaques.
  • With someone to explain it, you know which rock is the “turtle” and what history is inside the cave. That is why we send an English-speaking guide with you the whole way.
  • Tip: the monkeys in Bitan Valley grab food, so keep your snacks in your bag.

When should you go to Jinfo Mountain? Can you see snow and ski in winter?

You can go in any season, and each one shows you something different: azaleas in spring, cool air in summer, autumn colours in autumn, and snow and rime ice in winter. In winter, snow lies on Jinfo Mountain for more than three months. The snow season opens on a different day each year: 22 November in 2023, 6 December in 2024 and 30 December in 2025. In 2025 the north slope ski area opened more than a month earlier, on 25 November. The scenic area has not yet announced the dates for the 2026–27 snow season.

Spring (April to early May)Mountain azaleas in flower, first on the south slopeColder on the mountain than in the city, so bring a jacket
Summer (June to August)Escaping the heat: more than 10°C cooler than the cityOften rain and fog, so bring rain gear
Autumn (September to November)Trees and bamboo start to change colour from September; square bamboo shoots come into seasonThe cable cars close for maintenance every year, so check before you go
Winter (December to February)Snowfields, rime ice and frozen waterfalls; the ski area on the north slope, snow play on the west slopeSome paths close when they ice over
  • When the paths ice over in winter, the scenic area closes some routes on top. In December 2022, the Cloud Walkway, the old plank road, the Ancient Azalea Park, the Ecological Stone Forest and Jinfo Peak were closed for the whole season, and the other sights stayed open as normal. From 1 December 2025, the 13 km hiking path on the west slope was closed for the snow season.
  • Tip: at weekends after snow, the queues for the bus, the cable car and the ski area are very long. If you want snow without the crowds, choose a weekday.
  • Want snow but only have one day, and want to see the natural bridges too? See “Fairy Mountain or Jinfo Mountain?” in Chongqing in winter.

Jinfo Mountain or Wulong?

Both are World Natural Heritage sites, and each takes a whole day. At Wulong you look at the valley floor: the Three Natural Bridges and the gorge, mostly on paths and lifts. At Jinfo Mountain you look at the top: the cliff walkway, caves, high forest and, in winter, snow. If it is your first time in Chongqing and you can only choose one, we usually suggest Wulong first. If you have been to Wulong, or you want to escape the heat or see snow, choose Jinfo Mountain. Do not put both on the same day.

How do you buy tickets? What should older travellers and passport holders know?

At Jinfo Mountain the entry ticket, the cable car, the scenic area bus and the sightseeing bus on top are all paid separately, and prices differ by gate. For prices and discounts, go by the scenic area's notice on the day. We book at the actual price with no mark-up, and list every item on the quote. Be sure to bring your original passport.

  • Older travellers: across Chongqing, people aged 65 and over get a free entry ticket, but still pay for the cable car and the bus. Whether a foreign passport counts is up to the ticket window, so bring your original passport and ask there. See the Chongqing guide for older travellers.
  • ID: some scenic areas sell tickets through mini-programs that only accept Chinese ID cards. If you have a passport, go to a staffed ticket window. For the rules at each sight, see Chongqing attraction tickets and booking.
  • Free-entry months: the scenic area often runs free-entry offers (in June and September 2026, entry was free at both the West and North Gates), but the cable car and the bus are not free.

Can older people and children go? What if you are afraid of heights?

Yes. Most of the way is by cable car and sightseeing bus, so there is no climbing. On top it is mostly boardwalks and gentle paths, but there are steps and narrow sections, and inside the Ancient Buddha Cave the ground is uneven and very cold. If you are afraid of heights, the cable car and the cliff walkway may be hard, and you can skip the walkway and see the rest. Keep an eye on children: the monkeys in Bitan Valley grab things.

  • We set the pace by the slowest walker in your group. We would rather skip a place than rush you.
  • Which parts to walk, where to rest, and whether to take the sightseeing bus: the guide plans it around your energy and pace.
  • For more on travelling with children, see Chongqing with kids.

What should you wear? How cold is it on the mountain?

It is much cooler on the mountain than in the city. In summer it is on average more than 10°C cooler, in spring and autumn you need a jacket in the morning and evening, and in winter there is snow and ice. The weather changes fast, often with fog and rain. Wear trainers or walking shoes with good grip, bring a windproof jacket, and take one more layer for the Ancient Buddha Cave.

  • Tip: food and water on top are expensive, so take some snacks and water up with you.
