Quick local answer
For most first-time visitors, Dazu works as a private day trip focused on Baoding Shan, about 1.5 hours' drive west of central Chongqing. Peak-season entry (Mar-Nov) is 115 yuan for Baoding, 70 for Beishan or 140 combined, dropping to 100/50/120 in winter. The visitor centre sells tickets from 08:30 to 16:00 and Baoding Shan stops letting visitors in at 16:30, so a morning start matters. Beishan is worth adding only if timing, heat and walking comfort allow.
- Baoding is the core stop for most first-time travellers.
- Beishan adds depth but should not be forced into every group.
- Dazu is often gentler than Wulong for senior or culture-focused travellers.
Local planning table
| Stop / issue | Best use | Local note |
|---|---|---|
| Baoding | Essential | Most complete first-time experience |
| Beishan | Optional depth | Good for heritage-focused travellers |
| Museum/context stop | Useful | Makes the carvings easier to understand |
| Slow lunch | Recommended | Keeps the day comfortable |
| Return to Chongqing | Same day | Works well with private vehicle |
Local guiding note
Dazu is not just a photo stop. The guide needs to explain Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian themes without overloading guests. Good pacing keeps the carvings meaningful.
Who should choose Dazu
Choose Dazu if you want culture, history and a calmer day outside the megacity. Choose Wulong if you want dramatic nature and are comfortable with more active walking.
Best route structure
Morning departure, Baoding main visit, lunch, optional Beishan or museum/context stop, then return to Chongqing before the evening gets too late.
What are the opening hours at Dazu, and how do foreign passport holders buy tickets?
The Dazu visitor centre sells tickets from 08:30 to 16:00, and Baodingshan stops letting people in at 16:30. Online booking and the self-service machines need a Chinese ID card, so passport holders buy at the staffed window in the visitor centre and show the passport at the gate. Beishan, in town, admits until 17:00. Checked October 2026.
| Site | Opens | Ticket sales | Last entry | Closes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dazu visitor centre (sells Baodingshan tickets) | 08:30 | 08:30–16:00 | 16:10 | 16:30 |
| Baodingshan carvings | 09:00 | At the visitor centre only | 16:30 | 18:00 |
| Beishan, day session | 09:00 | 08:30–16:00 | 17:00 | 18:00 |
| Beishan, night session | 19:30 | 19:30–21:00 | 21:30 | 23:00 |
| Nanshan, Shimenshan, Shizhuanshan | 09:00 | 09:00–16:00 | 16:30 | 17:30 |
| Dazu Rock Carvings Museum | 09:00 | Inside the Baodingshan area | 16:30 | 17:00 |
Two things follow from that table. Baodingshan tickets are only sold and scanned at the visitor centre, not at the carvings, and a scenic-area bus links the two. And a group that leaves central Chongqing after 13:00 is cutting it fine: allow 1.5 hours on the road, then the ticket queue, then the bus, and ticket sales stop at 16:00.
On passports: the Academy's ticketing notice says online sales and the self-service machines are tied to the Chinese resident ID card. Holders of a passport, or a Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan travel permit, buy at the staffed counter in the visitor centre. At the gate, staff take a face scan and match it to the document, so carry the original passport, not a photocopy or a phone photo. A counter ticket can be refunded at the same counter before it is scanned.

What is at each of the five Dazu sites, and should you choose Baodingshan or Beishan?
Dazu is five clusters, inscribed by UNESCO in 1999 and carved between the 9th and 13th centuries. Baodingshan is the big one: about 500 metres of cliff with 31 groups of narrative scenes. Beishan is older and finer, more than 10,000 figures along 300 metres. The other three are small and rural. First visit: Baodingshan. Checked October 2026.
| Site | Where | Scale and date | What you see |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baodingshan | 12 km north-east of Dazu town, beside Shengshou Temple (the Holy Longevity Monastery) | About 500 m of cliff, 31 groups, late 12th to mid 13th century | Large Tantric Buddhist tableaux plus scenes of herdsmen and everyday life |
| Beishan | 1.5 km north of Dazu town | About 300 m, more than 10,000 carvings, late 9th to mid 12th century | Small niches of Tantric Buddhist and Taoist figures, with dated inscriptions |
| Nanshan | About 2 km south of Dazu town | 86 m, 12th century | Mostly Taoist subjects |
| Shimenshan | 20 km south-east, Shima town | 72 m, first half of the 12th century | Buddhist and Taoist figures side by side |
| Shizhuanshan | 20 km south-west, Sanqu town | 130 m, late 11th century | Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian images in one rare tripartite arrangement |
Baodingshan was carved as one planned programme between 1174 and 1252 under the monk Zhao Zhifeng, which is why it reads like a picture book. The Academy lists its set pieces: the Huayan Trinity, the Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara (Guanyin), the Nirvana of Sakyamuni (the reclining Buddha), the Sutra of Parental Kindness and the story of Liu Benzun. You walk a loop around the U-shaped Dafowan hollow, so it makes sense without much background. We allow about 2.5 hours.
Beishan is the opposite: small niches cut into one cliff over about 250 years, with the finest carving in Dazu but no single storyline. It rewards a guide and a slower eye, and it is the only site with an evening session. With one day, do Baodingshan. Add Beishan if you want detail and quiet, or see it lit at night (next section). Nanshan, Shimenshan and Shizhuanshan are for return visits or specialists.
The Dazu Rock Carvings Museum (09:00–17:00, last entry 16:30) sits in the Baodingshan area and sets Dazu in the wider story of Chinese cave art. Its digital cinema shows a 23-minute 4K film and an 18-minute 8K dome film, seven sittings a day from 09:30 to 15:10, which doubles as a seated rest for seniors.

Can you see the Beishan carvings at night?
Yes. Beishan runs a separate night session from 19:30 to 23:00, with tickets sold on site from 19:30 to 21:00 and last entry at 21:30. It closed on 20 July 2026 for a full overhaul of the night-tour equipment, with reopening set for 21 September 2026, and the Academy’s current timetable lists the night session. Baodingshan has no night opening. Checked October 2026.
The pairing that works is Baodingshan in the afternoon, dinner in Dazu town, then Beishan under lights. Beishan is 1.5 km from the town centre, a few minutes by car. The cost is the return: the drive back to central Chongqing is about 1.5 hours, so you reach the hotel near midnight, or you stay a night in Dazu. We suggest the overnight for families and seniors and the late drive for anyone on a tight schedule.

How do you get to Dazu from Chongqing, and from Chengdu?
By car, about 1.5 hours from central Chongqing to the Baodingshan visitor centre, timed by our drivers in September 2026. By train, Chongqing West or Shapingba to Dazu South takes 21 to 33 minutes, but only four trains a day run that way in October 2026, and the station is two buses or a taxi from Baodingshan. Checked October 2026.
- Private car. About 1.5 hours each way from the Jiefangbei and Yuzhong hotels. The car waits at the visitor centre, then takes you on to Beishan or back to town. This is how nearly all our Dazu days run; see day trips from Chongqing for how it compares with Wulong.
- Train from Chongqing. For 6 October 2026, 12306 lists G8678 (Chongqing West 07:31–08:02), G5342 (Chongqing West 10:09–10:42), G8648 (Shapingba 14:45–15:06) and G2890 (Chongqing West 18:06–18:39); second class 42 or 43 yuan on that date. Only the 07:31 gives you a full morning at Baodingshan. Trains back to Chongqing are more frequent, eight or nine a day.
- From Dazu South station. The Academy's published route is bus 204 or 206 into town, then bus 205 or the 2015 rock-carvings line to the visitor centre, or a taxi. Beishan is 1.5 km from the town centre and needs only a taxi.
- From Chengdu. Chengdu East to Dazu South is about one hour, seven or eight trains a day (for example G8685, 09:18–10:19 on 6 October). Our car meets you at Dazu South, you see Baodingshan, then drive on into Chongqing, so Dazu fits on the day you change cities. See Chengdu and Chongqing itinerary.

FAQ
The Dazu Rock Carvings are a UNESCO World Heritage group of Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian cliff carvings dating back roughly a thousand years. They matter for their scale, detail and the way three traditions sit side by side. A good guide explains the themes without overloading you, which keeps the carvings meaningful.
Yes, Dazu is one of the cleanest private day trips from Chongqing and the best cultural excursion for heritage-minded travellers who do not want a long multi-city transfer. It is a calmer, mostly cultural day, and it is especially rewarding with a guide who can explain the carvings on site.
For most first-time visitors we focus on Baoding Mountain, the most complete and popular group, then add Beishan if timing, heat and walking comfort allow. Baoding gives the fullest single experience, while Beishan adds depth for heritage-focused travellers. We tailor the mix to your interests and pace.
Dazu still involves walking, but the paths are relatively gentle and level compared with Wulong, so it usually suits seniors better. Baoding fills a comfortable half to full day, and adding Beishan, a museum or a slow lunch turns it into a relaxed full day. We pace it to keep everyone comfortable.
Yes, Dazu is often a better fit for seniors than Wulong because the paths are relatively gentle and level and the day is calmer and more cultural. There is still some walking, so we build in an unhurried pace, context stops and a slow lunch. Tell us your group's mobility and we plan around it.
They complement each other. Choose Dazu for culture, heritage and a calmer, gentler day outside the megacity; choose Wulong for dramatic karst nature with more active walking. Many travellers pair a cultural Dazu day with a nature-focused Wulong day. Share your interests and we balance the two for you.
No. Online sales and the self-service machines use the Chinese resident ID card. Bring your passport to the staffed window at the Dazu visitor centre between 08:30 and 16:00. At the gate staff take a face scan and match it to the passport, so the original document has to be with you. Our guide goes to the window with you.
Yes. It closed for equipment maintenance on 20 July 2026, with reopening set for 21 September 2026, and the Academy’s current timetable lists the night session. The night session runs 19:30 to 23:00, with tickets sold 19:30 to 21:00 and last entry at 21:30. Baodingshan does not open at night, so the usual pairing is Baodingshan in the afternoon and Beishan after dinner.
You can, but it is awkward. Trains from Chongqing West or Shapingba to Dazu South take about half an hour, yet only about four a day run, and the station is two buses or a taxi from Baodingshan. A private car is about 1.5 hours door to door and lets you add Beishan. If you want a train-based plan, come from Chengdu instead: seven or eight trains a day reach Dazu South in about an hour.
