Quick answer
Checked September 2026.
- Lines: visitors mainly use five lines plus the Loop Line. Line 1 (Jiefangbei, Ciqikou), Line 2 (Liziba, the zoo), Line 3 (Guanyinqiao, Chongqing North), Line 6 (Xiaoshizi, across the Yangtze) and Line 10 (Airport T3, Chongqing North).
- Fares: charged by distance, from 2 yuan.
- Airport to Jiefangbei: Line 10 to Qixinggang, then change to Line 1 for one stop to Jiaochangkou. The official route planner gives 6 yuan.
- Exits: Chongqing stations have many exits. Take the wrong one and you may come out on a road at a different level. The table below gives the station and exit for each sight.
- Map: our English map below shows the lines and stations visitors use most, with the nearest station for each main sight. For every line, the official network map from the Chongqing Municipal Transport Commission is in Chinese and English (10 February 2026 edition).
Chongqing metro map in English
Our map shows only the lines and stations visitors use most. Dotted circles mean stations are left out, and a star marks the sight near that station. Stations and line order follow Chongqing Rail Transit's timetable data dated 26 September 2026. Scroll sideways on a phone, or open the full-size map to zoom in and save it.
How to ride, step by step
- Go into the station. With a large case, look for the lift. Large luggage is not allowed on the escalators.
- Pass the security check.
- Scan or buy a ticket. The ticket machines have no English screen. The easiest way in is to scan the Alipay transit QR code at the gate. You can also buy a single ticket with a foreign bank card at the staffed ticket window.
- Board the train. All 13 metro lines announce stops in Chinese and English.
- Leave by the right exit. Check the exit for your sight in the table below before you head up. The wrong exit can put you on a different road level.
Which station and exit for each sight
| Going to | Station | Exit |
|---|---|---|
| Yangtze River Cableway (north station) | Xiaoshizi (Lines 1, 6) | Exit 5B, about 20 metres from the exit |
| Hongya Cave | Xiaoshizi (Lines 1, 6) | Exit 6 or Exit 9 |
| Hongya Cave (another way) | Linjiangmen (Line 2) | Walk about 500 metres north-east from the station |
| Jiefangbei | Linjiangmen (Line 2), or Xiaoshizi (Lines 1, 6) | From Xiaoshizi, about 500 metres on foot |
| Shibati | Jiaochangkou (Lines 1, 2) | Exit 4, about 140 metres on foot |
| Liziba (train through the building) | Liziba (Line 2) | The viewing platform is towards Exit 1. Go down to ground level and cross the road |
| Ciqikou Ancient Town | Ciqikou (Line 1) | Exit 1 |
| Raffles City / Chaotianmen | Chaotianmen (end of Line 1) | Exit 2 comes out at Raffles City |
| Three Gorges Museum, Great Hall of the People | Zengjiayan (Lines 2, 10); Niujiaotuo (Line 3); Auditorium (Line 10) | — |
| Eling Park, Eling No. 2 Factory | Eling (Line 1) | Exit 2A is temporarily closed from 20 August 2026. Use another exit |
| Chongqing Zoo (pandas) | Zoo (Line 2) | — |
| Baixiangju | Xiaoshizi (Lines 1, 6) | Exit 5B, then walk towards Dongshuimen Bridge |
| Guanyinqiao | Guanyinqiao (Lines 3, 9) | — |
| Nanshan Yikeshu viewpoint | No metro station nearby | Take a taxi |
The cableway, Hongya Cave and Jiefangbei directions follow the Chongqing municipal government's attraction pages (cableway, Hongya Cave, Jiefangbei, 26 August 2026).
Liziba station is being renovated. Parts of the platform are closed until 30 November and Hall A until 31 October. The whole project is expected to finish on 30 December (official notice, June 2026). While Hall A is closed, go in and out through Exit 1.
Airport and railway stations
| Going to | Line |
|---|---|
| Jiangbei Airport (all flights use T3) | Only Line 10 reaches T3. Line 3 stops at T2 only, so change there to Line 10 |
| Chongqing North, South Square | Line 3, Line 10, Loop Line |
| Chongqing North, North Square | Line 4, Line 10 |
| Chongqing West | Line 5, Loop Line (not Line 10) |
| Chongqing East | Line 6 |
| Shapingba | Line 1, Line 9, Loop Line |
Since 23 December 2025, all flights at Jiangbei Airport use Terminal 3. Before you leave for Chongqing North, check whether your train ticket says South Square or North Square. The two squares are on different lines.

Four easy mistakes
- Line 3 does not go to T3. For the airport, take Line 10.
- Chongqing West Station is not on Line 10.
- Chaotianmen station is on Line 1 only. Line 6 does not go to Chaotianmen.
- Eling station is on Line 1, not Line 2.
Foreign visitors: paying, and understanding announcements
From the Chongqing Municipal Transport Commission, September 2026:
- Scan to enter: WeChat or Alipay linked to a foreign bank card can scan you in at the gate.
- Pay by card: major transport hubs and metro stations take Visa, Mastercard, JCB and other foreign bank cards for tickets. The staffed ticket window at every station takes them.
- Announcements: all 13 metro lines announce stops in Chinese and English.
- Translation devices: 24 metro stations have multilingual translation devices. Ask the station staff for directions.
- Ticket machines: there is no English screen. Scanning the Alipay transit QR code at the gate is the simplest way in.
Chongqing's local Yukuai code only works with a Chongqing social security card. Visitors cannot use it, so there is no need to look for it.
Fares and paying
- Fares go by distance. Since 30 July 2025: 2 yuan for up to 4 km, then rising in steps.
- Some common fares (official route planner, 28 September 2026): Airport T3 to Jiaochangkou 6 yuan; Xiaoshizi to Ciqikou 6 yuan; Xiaoshizi to Liziba 3 yuan.
- Children 1.3 metres tall and under ride free.
Is a day ticket worth it?
- On sale as usual from 10 February 2026: one-day ticket 18 yuan (24 hours from activation), three-day ticket 45 yuan (72 hours), five-day ticket 70 yuan (120 hours).
- One ticket is for one person. It is not registered to your name, cannot be replaced if lost, and cannot be refunded. It is not valid on the Jiangtiao and Bitong lines, which visitors hardly ever use.
- The maths: Airport T3 to Jiaochangkou is 6 yuan and Xiaoshizi to Ciqikou is 6 yuan. Three long rides like these in a day and the ticket pays for itself. If you only ride a few stops around the Yuzhong peninsula, single tickets are cheaper.
Taking luggage on the metro
- Large luggage is not allowed on escalators. Use the lift. Prams and trolleys cannot go on escalators either.
- Luggage limit: one item can weigh up to 20 kg, with length, width and height adding up to no more than 2 metres (Chongqing rail transit riding rules). A 28-inch checked suitcase is within the limit.
- Some stations are very deep. Hongtudi, where Lines 6 and 10 meet, is about 94 metres at its deepest, the height of about 31 storeys. From Exit 3A the escalators take about 4 minutes to the Line 6 gates and about 7 minutes to Line 10. There are lifts in the station. If you are taking Line 10 to the airport, allow for this.
- Straight off a long-haul flight, with several cases to take to the hotel, the metro is not the easiest choice.
When it is most crowded
Weekday morning and evening peaks. Guanyinqiao, Lianglukou, Xiaoshizi and Shapingba, all stations visitors use a lot, are the busiest (peak-time alert from the metro operator). If you have a train or flight to catch, do not plan a transfer in the rush hour.
First and last trains
First trains leave the starting stations between about 06:00 and 06:30 (06:00 on Lines 1, 3 and 6, 06:10 on the Loop Line), and the last trains leave at around 23:00. At stations along the way, the last train can be after midnight. Times differ by station, direction, and working day or holiday. If you have an early flight, or want the last train after an evening out, check the official timetable before you go.
From Airport T3 into the city (Line 10 towards Lanhualu): first train 06:30; last train 00:03 on working days, 23:23 on holidays.
Service often runs later over public holidays. Over the 2026 National Day holiday, several lines run later, the latest until 00:09 the next morning. The official notice on the day has the final times.
If you miss the last train, a taxi is the safest bet.
Why the metro in Chongqing takes longer than you expect
Stations sit on hills, inside buildings and by the rivers, and their exits can be several levels apart. A transfer can mean a long walk inside the station, and an exit can bring you out on a different road level. Changing lines at Xiaoshizi (Lines 1 and 6), Lianglukou (Lines 1 and 3) or Jiaochangkou (Lines 1 and 2) takes about 5 minutes, a walk of about 400 metres.
With luggage, straight off a long flight, with young children, or on a day with sights at several different heights, a car is easier. For more on moving between the city's levels, see how to get around Chongqing's 3D city.
Can I leave my luggage at a metro station?
Yes. As of April 2026, Chongqing Rail Transit has self-service lockers at 83 stations, including Airport T3, both squares of Chongqing North, Xiaoshizi, Jiaochangkou, Liziba and Guanyinqiao. The largest compartment takes a 28-inch case. No deposit, no booking. The lockers are inside the paid area, past the ticket gates. Checked October 2026.
How it works, from the operator's notice of 23 April 2026 (Chongqing municipal government):
- Three sizes: large, medium and small. The largest takes a 28-inch suitcase.
- Scan and go: scan the code on the locker, complete the real-name check on the screen and pick a size. No deposit and no booking. The operator says the whole thing takes about a minute.
- Security first: your bag goes through the station security check, and the same banned-items rules apply as for parcels.
- Inside the gates: the lockers are in the paid area, so you store after you have scanned in, and you scan in again to collect.
- Change of plan: from your phone, a stored bag can be turned into an SF Express delivery to an address, such as your hotel.
Stations the operator names: Airport T3, Chongqing North (North Square and South Square), Jiaochangkou, Liziba, Guanyinqiao and Shapingba (27 April 2026). In the Yuzhong district, the peninsula where most sights are, lockers are at 16 stations, including Xiaoshizi, Chaotianmen, Jiefangbei, Niujiaotuo and Shiyoulu (CNR, 30 April 2026). T3 and Chongqing North South Square also have a station service point, open since 24 January 2025, with a parcel desk run with SF Express and storage lockers of its own (CNR).
The simplest option is still your hotel: ask the front desk to keep your bags after check-out and collect them on the way to the station or airport. If you are heading to the airport with luggage, see our airport to city centre page.
Which is the deepest station, and how long does it take to get out?
Hongyancun, where Lines 5 and 9 meet, is the deepest metro station in China: the track is about 116 metres down. Its Exit 2 at the foot of the hill and Exit 4 at the top are 141 metres apart in height. Four high-speed lifts take you from the concourse to the street in under a minute. Checked October 2026.
- By escalator: from the platform to Exit 4 (Jingwei Avenue, on the hilltop) there are 8 escalators in a row. The Exit 4 passage is about 340 metres long, on a slope of 27 to 30 degrees.
- By lift: on the Exit 4 side of the concourse, 4 lifts run at 2.5 metres a second and rise 99 metres, so you reach the street in under a minute (Chongqing municipal government, 15 October 2025). With a case, go straight to the lifts.
- Exit 2 is at the foot of the hill on Xiatuwan Road, by Shabin Road along the Jialing River. Exit 6 comes out facing Hongyancun Bridge and the river, and the station links to the Banshan cliff-line walking trail (Chongqing Daily via Xinhua, 4 June 2026).
- Do you need it? Most visitors never pass through Hongyancun. None of the sights on our map are on Line 5 or Line 9 (Line 9 does stop at Shapingba station, and Line 5 at Chongqing West station). It is worth a stop only if you want the depth itself, or the Hongyan revolutionary sites next to the station.
- Rule for every deep station, Hongyancun and Hongtudi alike: with a case, walk past the escalators and follow the lift sign. Large luggage is not allowed on the escalators in any case.

It is a good option for selected direct journeys. For a full sightseeing day, a luggage day or a multi-stop route, a mix of metro and private transport is often more comfortable and more predictable.
Each platform is signed with the name of the last station in that direction. Before you board, match that terminus with the direction you want on our map. For example, from Airport T3 into the city on Line 10, the direction to look for is Lanhualu. If you do board the wrong way, get off at the next station and take the train back from the opposite platform.
