Quick answer
Checked September 2026.
First time in Chongqing, with only one day: stay in the city, and save Wulong for when you have a second day. Our city day runs in this order: Yangtze River Cableway → Baixiangju → Shancheng Lane (lunch) → the Liziba monorail through the building → Eling No. 2 Factory → Ciqikou → Hongya Cave at night. We set off at 8:30 in the morning and you are back at your hotel around 9 pm. The car is yours until 23:00, and the guide stays with you for the whole agreed route. With only half a day: see Liziba and the pandas in the morning, or in the afternoon ride the cableway, walk Baixiangju and Shancheng Lane, then stay on for the night view.
- The Liziba viewing platform, Hongya Cave and Ciqikou are all free. For places that need a ticket, such as the Yangtze River Cableway, go by the scenic area's notice on the day. We book them for you at the actual price.
- From 3 September 2026, the Hongya Cave lights come on at 19:30 and go off at 23:00. The times change a few times a year, so go by the latest Yuzhong District notice.
- Liziba station is under renovation and due to finish on 30 December 2026. Trains still pass through the building as normal.
Put this day into your private trip: send us your dates, how many of you there are and where your hotel is, and we set the order around the notices for that day. WhatsApp us
Is one day in Chongqing enough?
It is enough for the best of the city, but not for all of Chongqing. In one day you can take in the 8D terrain, the monorail through the building, the cableway across the river and the Hongya Cave night view, and still have a hotpot. Sights outside the city, such as Wulong and Dazu, need a day of their own. If Chongqing is the only city in southwest China on your trip, two to three days is more comfortable.
The hard part of a city day is not the distance, it is the terrain: two hundred metres on the map can mean dozens of steps. That is where a private day tour earns its keep: the car moves with you. Where you can get out at the top and walk down, the car waits at the bottom, so you avoid walking back uphill as far as we can. For first-time visitors with only one day, we always suggest staying in the city. For how many days suits you, see how many days in Chongqing.
How do you plan one day? The route, hour by hour
This is the order our drivers and guides usually run. First thing in the morning, cross the river on the Yangtze River Cableway, away from the late-afternoon stretch when the queues are longest. Then Baixiangju, and lunch around Shancheng Lane. In the afternoon, head west for the Liziba monorail through the building, Eling No. 2 Factory and Ciqikou. In the evening, back to Yuzhong for the Hongya Cave lights. All the stops are in the main city, and the car takes you door to door all day.

Classic version (first time in Chongqing)
| Time | Where | How long | Why this order |
|---|---|---|---|
| 08:30 | Hotel pickup (Jiefangbei area) | — | Leave early and go to the cableway first |
| 09:00–10:00 | Yangtze River Cableway across the river | About 1 hour | The queue is longest in the hour before sunset, so we go in the morning. After crossing, you ride the cableway back or the car picks you up on the south bank. The guide decides on the day, by the queue. |
| 10:00–11:00 | Baixiangju | About 1 hour | An old residential block, with the cableway passing in front of it. How much you walk up and down, the guide plans around your energy. |
| 11:00–13:00 | Shancheng Lane, lunch | About 2 hours | Old lanes in Yuzhong to wander through, with lunch in the same area. Hotpot, xiaomian noodles or jianghu cai: it is up to your taste. |
| 13:30–14:10 | Liziba monorail through the building | 20–40 minutes | The viewing platform is free. Trains come through every few minutes in both directions, so there is no long wait. |
| 14:30–15:30 | Eling Park and Eling No. 2 Factory | About 1 hour | From the high point of the park you can see the Yangtze and Jialing rivers meet at Chaotianmen. The No. 2 Factory is an old printing works turned into a creative park. |
| 16:00–17:30 | Ciqikou Ancient Town | About 1.5 hours | Free, with no ticket. The main street is mostly souvenirs, so the guide takes you through the back lanes and along the riverside stretch. |
| 17:30–19:00 | Dinner | — | If you had hotpot for lunch, switch to Chongqing noodles or jianghu cai in the evening. |
| From 19:30 | Hongya Cave lights | About 1 hour | We don't squeeze inside Hongya Cave. We go to Qiansimen Bridge or the far bank to see the whole lit-up front. |
| About 21:00 | Back to your hotel | — | — |
The car is yours until 23:00, and the guide stays with you for the whole agreed route. If you want longer at one stop, or fewer steps on one stretch, tell us before you set off and the guide will adjust to your pace.

Easy version (older travellers, young children, or anyone wary of steps)
| Time | Where |
|---|---|
| 09:30 | Hotel pickup |
| 10:00–11:00 | Yangtze River Cableway across the river (the north station is at Xiaoshizi, 20 metres from the metro exit) |
| 11:15–12:45 | Lunch around Shancheng Lane, then back to the hotel for a rest |
| 15:30–16:10 | Liziba monorail through the building |
| 16:30–17:30 | Eling Park (the car parks at the park gate, so there is less climbing) |
| 17:30–19:00 | Dinner |
| From 19:30 | Hongya Cave lights, seen from the riverside; back at your hotel around 20:30 |
The easy version keeps the same order as the classic one. It drops Baixiangju and Ciqikou, and adds a rest at the hotel in the middle of the day. How many steps you take and where you sit down for a break, the guide plans around your energy and pace.
What if you only have half a day?
Half a day is enough for two or three stops. For a morning, pair the Liziba monorail through the building with the pandas at the zoo: both are on metro Line 2, six stops apart. For an afternoon running into the evening, ride the Yangtze River Cableway, see Baixiangju and walk Shancheng Lane, then watch the Hongya Cave lights come on after dark. We can plan half a day too, and quote for your time slot.
Half-day options
| Your half day is | Route | About how long | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Morning | Liziba → Chongqing Zoo panda house (panda house 9:00–17:00; zoo entry stops at 16:30) | About 4 hours | Families with children; a train or flight to catch in the afternoon |
| Morning | Liziba → Eling Park and the No. 2 Factory → lunch | About 4 hours | Taking photos, not queuing |
| Afternoon into evening | Yangtze River Cableway → Baixiangju → Shancheng Lane → dinner → Hongya Cave lights | About 6 hours | Arriving in Chongqing that morning |
| Evening only | Hongya Cave, riverside viewpoints and a meal | 3–4 hours | See Chongqing night tour |
| A stopover between flights | Worked back from your departure time | Depends on how long you have | See the Chongqing airport layover guide |
| Boarding a cruise that evening | The city by day, then we drop you at Chaotianmen pier in the early evening | Depends on boarding time | See boarding a Three Gorges cruise in Chongqing |
Coming from Chengdu by high-speed train and going back the same day also works. For the Chongqing part, it is our own car and guide: we meet you at the station in Chongqing and take you back to the station in the evening. We can buy the train tickets for you (we need your passport details). For which train and which station, see Chengdu and Chongqing itinerary.

Only one day: stay in the city, or go to Wulong or Dazu?
On a first visit, stay in the city. Wulong is about 2.5 to 3 hours each way by car, and from September to April the scenic areas close at 16:30. Five or six hours of the day go on the car, and you see none of the city. You are back in town around 8 pm, and the Hongya Cave lights stay on until 23:00, so you can still catch them. Dazu is closer, about 1.5 hours each way, and you are back in the afternoon in time for the night view. It suits people who are interested in rock carvings and have already seen the city.
Three ways to use one day
| City day | Wulong day | Dazu day | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drive each way | All in the main city, door to door | About 2.5–3 hours | About 1.5 hours |
| Leave at | 08:30 | 07:00 | 08:00 |
| The time that sets the day | Hongya Cave lights in the evening | Three Natural Bridges and the other sites: 8:30–16:30 from September to April | Visitor centre ticket sales 8:30–16:00; last entry to Baodingshan 16:30 |
| What you see | The 8D terrain, the monorail through the building, the cableway, the night view, hotpot | World Natural Heritage karst: the Three Natural Bridges and the Longshui Gorge fissure | World Cultural Heritage: the Baodingshan cliff carvings |
| Hongya Cave the same evening? | Yes, it is how the day ends | Back in the city around 20:00, in time to see it | Yes |
| Who it suits | First time in Chongqing | You have seen the city and just want mountains and rivers | People who like history and religious art; older travellers (the walking is flatter than at Wulong) |

What does a private day tour include, and how much is it?
Our day is one unit: one licensed English-speaking guide (a Mandarin-speaking guide can also be arranged), one driver and one vehicle matched to your group size, for your group only. The car is yours until 23:00, and the guide stays with you for the whole agreed route. Entrance tickets, meals, and the guide's and driver's meal allowance are not included. For tickets, go by the scenic area's notice on the day. We book them at the actual price with no mark-up, and every item is listed on the quote. The starting price we publish is for multi-day trips (3 days 2 nights from $380 per person). A day tour is quoted separately for your date and group size, and the quote is free.
The vehicle is matched to your group size. Two people plus the guide, or 3–4 people, ride in a 7-seat vehicle. 5–6 people ride in a 9-seat vehicle, and 7–8 people in a 15-seat vehicle. For a bigger group, tell us how many of you there are and we match the vehicle to your numbers. If you have a lot of luggage, tell us how many large suitcases and we match the vehicle to your luggage.
Why we don't sell the car and the guide separately: the driver doesn't guide, and the guide doesn't drive. Book them separately and you spend the day going back and forth between two people. A day in Chongqing naturally runs into the night, because the Hongya Cave lights only come on after dark, so the car is yours until 23:00. If you only need a one-way airport pickup, station pickup or drop-off at the cruise pier, you can book that on its own: see the next section. For how prices work, see our pricing page.
What do you eat on the day, and where?
One hotpot and one bowl of xiaomian noodles is enough. At the old hotpot places locals use, we found 60 to 80 yuan a head when we checked in August 2026. Upstairs places with river views around Hongya Cave and Jiefangbei cost noticeably more. Hotpot is cooked in a beef-tallow broth that is spicy by default. If you can't take the heat, order a split pot. Not every place has it, so the guide asks at the door. To queue less at dinner, arrive before six.
On the classic version, lunch is around Shancheng Lane and dinner is at Ciqikou or on the way back into town. Whether hotpot is lunch or dinner is up to your taste; the other meal becomes noodles or jianghu cai. If you are vegetarian or have allergies, tell us in advance and the guide will help you choose a restaurant and order. See your first Chongqing hotpot and eating in Chongqing without the spice.

Where does the day most often get stuck? (Checked September 2026)
Four things catch people out most: Liziba station is under renovation, the Yangtze River Cableway stops for one day a month, Hongya Cave fills up and limits entry in the evening, and some places are closed on Mondays. The first three all come with official notices, and before we plan, we check each one against the notices for your day.
- Liziba station is being renovated until the end of 2026. From 16 June to 30 November 2026, parts of the platform are closed, and Hall A is closed from 1 September to 31 October. The work is due to finish on 30 December. Trains still stop and still pass through the building. Follow the signs on site to the entrances that are open.
- The Liziba viewing platform gets crowded on public holidays. On holidays the guide changes the order to suit the crowds on the day. If it is too busy, we go on to the next stop first and come back later.
- The Yangtze River Cableway stops for maintenance about one day a month. The closure days announced from March to July 2026 were all Tuesdays or Wednesdays, mostly at the end of the month, with notice given only a few days ahead. If your day falls on one, we move the river crossing to another day, or watch the cableway pass in front of the building at Baixiangju instead.
- The cableway queues by time slot and number range. Tickets are valid on the day only. Most people board at the north station (Xinhua Road); boarding at the south bank end, across the river, is relatively quieter. March to November: 08:00–22:00. In winter (December to February), last season's hours were 08:00–21:00, and a new notice comes out each winter. Public holidays: 07:30–22:30.
- Hongya Cave is busiest from early evening to late at night. On public holidays, the roads around it are under traffic control from 4 pm and cars cannot get to the door. When it is full, entry is limited on site. We don't squeeze inside: we take you to Qiansimen Bridge or the far bank to watch.
- Mondays: the Three Gorges Museum is closed on Mondays (except public holidays). From January 2026 the Eling trestle walkway closes every Monday for maintenance (go by the current notice from the Yuzhong District park management centre), and on other days you need to book online under your real name. If you want to add an indoor stop for a rainy day, don't plan it for a Monday.
- Bring your original passport. Two Rivers cruise tickets are sold under your real name, and Dazu needs your original passport, with a face check at the gate. Some mini-programs only accept Chinese ID cards; if so, go to a staffed ticket window. See tickets, booking and passport rules.
- National Day and Spring Festival: popular sights may add booking or limit entry at short notice, and the cableway also opens early, at 07:30.
Can we start straight from the airport, the railway station or a cruise?
Yes. We send the car for your flight or train time. The driver meets you at the exit with a name sign, and if there is sightseeing that day, the guide comes too. Your luggage stays in the car, the day tour starts straight away, and at the end we drop you at the airport, the station or Chaotianmen pier. If you only need a one-way airport pickup, station pickup or pier drop-off, you can book that on its own. On your arrival day the driver meets you with a name sign and takes you straight to your hotel; with no sightseeing that day, there is no guide. For two foreign travellers on a one-way transfer without a guide, we send a 5-seat car. If you are transiting on an international flight, first check whether your visa and time on the ground let you leave the airport: see the Chongqing airport layover guide. If you are boarding a Three Gorges cruise that evening, see boarding a Three Gorges cruise in Chongqing.
How do we help you plan the day?
- Before you set off, we go through the notices for that day: the Liziba renovation, cableway maintenance days, the Hongya Cave lighting times and holiday crowd limits.
- We set the order by the terrain: where you can get out at the top and walk down, the car waits at the bottom, so you avoid walking back uphill as far as we can.
- If it rains or the fog is heavy, we move the indoor stops earlier, and the night view goes ahead as planned.
- If steps are hard for you, the guide switches to viewpoints the car can reach, and plans around your energy and pace.
For older travellers and families with children, see also our senior-friendly tour and family tour.
Only one day, or only half a day?
Send us your dates, how many of you there are, where your hotel is and your flight or train, and we will reply with a private route set out hour by hour and a written quote.

It is enough for the best of the city: the 8D terrain, the Liziba monorail through the building, the Yangtze River Cableway and the Hongya Cave night view, plus a hotpot. It is not enough for Wulong and Dazu outside the city. If Chongqing is your only city in southwest China, two to three days is more comfortable.

From afternoon into evening: the Yangtze River Cableway, Baixiangju and Shancheng Lane, then Hongya Cave after dark. We can plan half a day too, and quote for your time slot.
You don't have to have one, but one day is tight. Distances on the map are misleading in Chongqing, there are a lot of steps, and at popular sights you queue by number range and show your passport for real-name entry. With the guide and the car together, you don't have to find the way, queue or call a car yourself.
On a first visit, we suggest staying in the city. Wulong is about 2.5 to 3 hours each way by car and closes at 16:30 from September to April, so five or six hours of the day go on the car, and you are back in the city around 8 pm. Dazu is about 1.5 hours each way, and you are back in the afternoon with time to see Hongya Cave.
